Swamp Cypress *Taxodium distichum*, also called Bald Cypress, is a remarkable deciduous conifer. This unusual tree loses its needles each winter, which is why it’s called ‘Bald’.

The tree is well-known for its delicate, pale green foliage. Come autumn, the needles change to a lovely russet-bronze colour before dropping. This makes for a wonderful seasonal show.

Young Swamp Cypress trees have a pyramid-like form. With age, they grow a wider, flatter crown. The bark is quite attractive as well, showing a reddish-brown shade that strips away in pieces.

In wild settings, it grows very tall. In British gardens, it usually reaches 15-20 metres after many years. This is a tree that lives for a very long time, often for hundreds of years.

What makes it special is how well it grows in waterlogged ground. It can cope with flooding from time to time. This makes it ideal for soggy spots where other trees won’t thrive.

In really wet places, it might form ‘knees’. These are wooden bumps from the roots that stick up above water or soil. They make an interesting feature in gardens.

Raised from seed at our tree nursery in Euxton, Lancashire.

Caring for *Taxodium distichum* is relatively easy. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. This tree prefers moist, acidic soils but adapts to various conditions. It can handle wet or occasionally flooded areas. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter if needed, but this tree generally doesn’t require much pruning. Feed annually in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Swamp Cypress is generally pest and disease resistant. However, keep an eye out for spider mites in dry conditions. In colder areas, provide some winter protection for young trees until they’re well-established.
