The Cedar of Lebanon Cedrus libani serves as a magnificent testament to bygone eras, with its grand stature adorning gardens for hundreds of years. This leisurely-growing evergreen develops into a spectacular specimen when given adequate time and room, potentially achieving impressive heights exceeding 35 metres. Its characteristic horizontal branching creates the renowned flat-topped tiers that form the tree’s unmistakable outline. The short, dark green needles densely clothe the branches, offering rich texture year-round.
Younger Cedar of Lebanon specimens show a conical shape, slowly forming the celebrated flat-crowned top with age – a trait that has established them as prized features in stately gardens and parks. During autumn, prominent upright cones emerge on the higher branches, requiring two years to ripen before breaking apart naturally to release their seeds.
The tree’s charm goes well beyond its striking appearance – it’s remarkably tough too. After settling in, it demonstrates excellent drought tolerance and strong wind resistance. It serves an important function for wildlife, offering essential shelter for birds and smaller mammals. Whilst valued historically for its long-lasting and aromatic timber, these trees are now mainly cultivated for their decorative qualities and historic importance.
