The Nootka Cypress Pendula *Xanthocyparis nootkatensis* ‘Pendula’ is an elegant weeping conifer that adds wonderful drama to gardens. Its branches droop gracefully downwards, forming a beautiful architectural element that provides year-round interest. The blue-green needles create a thick, cascading curtain that sways gently in the wind.
This *Xanthocyparis* has a slow growth rate, which makes it ideal for compact gardens where space matters. As it matures, it forms a tall, narrow shape with drooping branches that can sweep right down to ground level. This eye-catching form makes it excellent as a centrepiece or feature plant.
Native to North America, this special variety has been loved in gardens for more than a century. The needles remain bright and healthy through winter, providing welcome colour when everything else looks bare. Its tidy growth means it seldom needs cutting back, so it’s great for gardeners who want something easy to care for.
This lovely *Xanthocyparis* adds real charm to contemporary and classic gardens alike. It works well with spring bulbs planted underneath and looks especially attractive beside ponds or streams where its image in the water doubles the effect.
Your *Xanthocyparis nootkatensis* ‘Pendula’ will thrive in well-drained soil in either full sun or partial shade. While it’s quite adaptable, it prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system, but once settled, it’s quite drought tolerant. No regular pruning is needed – simply remove any dead or crossing branches in late winter if necessary. This tree is very hardy and can cope well with British winters, though it appreciates some shelter from harsh winds.
