The Hinoki cypress *Chamaecyparis obtusa* is also known as the Japanese cypress. The ‘Karamachiba’ cultivar stands out for its lovely colour changes throughout the seasons.

‘Karamachiba’ catches the eye with its delicate, lace-like foliage that develops attractive bronze hues during winter.

This variety has a slow growth habit and stays naturally compact in size.

‘Karamachiba’ shares the same growing preferences as other *Chamaecyparis obtusa* cultivars, needing well-drained soil conditions. It adapts to various soil types provided they don’t hold too much water. It performs well in full sun but also tolerates partial shade nicely.

The striking seasonal colours and neat, compact growth make ‘Karamachiba’ perfect for highlighting rock gardens, borders, or growing as a feature plant in pots and containers. It works brilliantly in mixed plantings where it adds colour contrast and textural interest alongside other plants.

Pruning is seldom needed thanks to its naturally slow growth. Water regularly during the first few years after planting and during long dry periods, but avoid waterlogged conditions.

When fully established, *Chamaecyparis obtusa* ‘Karamachiba’ is extremely hardy and tolerates temperatures as low as -20C.
