This variety of Sawara Cypress Chamaecyparis pisifera stands out for its striking blue-grey needles, offering gardeners a brilliant way to bring lasting colour and interesting texture to their plots throughout the year.
‘Boulevard’ has a slow to moderate growth habit, usually putting on around 15-20cm each year. It will eventually reach 3–4 metres tall, developing a broad pyramid to cone-like shape that brings structure and height to garden spaces. Its neat, compact growth makes it perfect for average-sized gardens, works well as a feature plant, or looks brilliant in mixed plantings and large pots.
The real showstopper is the foliage. The delicate, soft needles display a lovely silvery blue-grey shade that stays consistent all year round. This cool tone makes a brilliant contrast with other green garden plants and brings a peaceful, almost mystical quality to the space. During winter months, the foliage develops subtle purple hints, keeping the garden interesting when other plants have died back.
Despite looking quite delicate, ‘Boulevard’ is actually quite tough. It suits our climate well and copes with both full sun and partial shade, though the colour develops best in sunny spots. It likes well-draining, slightly acidic soil but will adapt to different soil conditions. It also handles urban environments reasonably well, making it suitable for various garden situations.
This conifer is popular with gardeners because of its unusual colour and texture. It works brilliantly as a standout feature plant, where the silvery-blue needles become a real talking point. You can also plant several together to make a soft, cool-coloured backdrop for other plants. It suits both contemporary and traditional garden styles, bringing year-round class and style.
Those interested in wildlife will find that ‘Boulevard’s dense growth offers good shelter for small birds and insects, particularly during winter. The compact shape gives protection from bad weather and predators.
For anyone wanting a hassle-free, striking evergreen that delivers year-round interest, Sawara Cypress ‘Boulevard’ fits the bill perfectly. Its gorgeous silvery-blue needles and graceful shape bring a touch of class to any garden, making an appealing centrepiece that looks good in every season.
Sawara Cypress ‘Boulevard’ is relatively easy to care for, which is good news for UK gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but it’s adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it appreciates consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought. Feed it with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring if desired, but it generally doesn’t require much feeding. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you want to maintain a specific shape or size. If you need to prune, do it in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
