Hinoki Cypress ‘Nana Aurea’ Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Aurea’ is a beautiful compact conifer that brings golden colour to gardens throughout the year. This evergreen grows slowly and forms a neat, rounded shape with lovely bright yellow-green leaves. The ‘Nana Aurea’ is a dwarf form of the traditional Hinoki Cypress, which makes it ideal for small gardens, rock gardens, or growing in pots.

This tree is popular with gardeners because it needs very little looking after and looks good all year round. The golden leaves really stand out in darker spots and work well alongside other green plants. Over time, the Hinoki Cypress ‘Nana Aurea’ takes on a slightly uneven shape, which gives your garden more character.

This conifer does well in our climate and grows happily in most soils, provided they drain well. It’s perfect for gardeners who want to add both structure and colour to their gardens without having to do lots of pruning or maintenance.

The Hinoki Cypress comes from Japan originally, where it’s seen as a sacred tree and grows in temple gardens. You don’t need a temple though – this lovely tree will bring calm and oriental beauty to any garden.

Hinoki Cypress ‘Nana Aurea’ is relatively easy to care for, making it ideal for both novice and experienced gardeners. Plant it in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade for the best foliage colour. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but will tolerate most soil types. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system, then reduce watering as it matures. This cypress is drought-tolerant once established. Pruning isn’t necessary, but you can lightly trim in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape if desired. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth.
