The Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa goes by several names including Japanese cypress, and hails from Japan. The ‘Nana Gracilis’ variety stands out as quite special among the many cultivars available.
What makes ‘Nana Gracilis’ so appealing is its brilliant deep green foliage that really comes alive in full sun conditions. The scale-like leaves form attractive fan-shaped clusters, creating a thick, richly textured look throughout the plant.
This dwarf variety grows at a leisurely pace and stays nicely compact. Over time, it develops into a rounded, almost spherical shape. While it can reach several feet tall after many years, its slow growth means it stays small and manageable for ages.
‘Nana Gracilis’ does best in well-draining soil, just like other Hinoki cypress varieties. It’s quite adaptable to different soil types provided they don’t stay waterlogged. Full sun brings out the best golden tones, though it’s perfectly happy in partial shade too.
With its gorgeous golden-green colour and neat compact habit, ‘Nana Gracilis’ works brilliantly for highlighting rock gardens, borders, or as a striking feature plant in pots and containers. It’s also lovely in mixed plantings where it creates beautiful colour contrasts alongside other plants.
This variety is wonderfully easy-going and seldom needs pruning thanks to its naturally slow growth. Water regularly when young and during dry periods, but make sure it never sits in waterlogged soil.
Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Gracilis’ is very hardy and can withstand cold temperatures down to -20C.
