The Dawn Redwood *Metasequoia glyptostroboides* stands as one of nature’s most extraordinary trees, carrying an incredible story of survival. Scientists believed this species had vanished millions of years ago, knowing it only from ancient fossils. Then in 1944, living specimens were found growing in a remote Chinese valley, creating a sensation amongst botanists worldwide. Although now cultivated globally following this amazing rediscovery, the IUCN still lists it as endangered because so few survive in the wild.

This fast-growing deciduous conifer can reach impressive heights of 25-40 metres when planted out. The tree develops a classic pyramid shape with a strong central trunk and horizontal branches that curve upwards at their ends. Its soft, bright green needles grow in opposite pairs along the stems, creating a feathery texture. Come autumn, this fresh green foliage transforms into stunning shades of bronze and orange-brown before dropping to reveal the tree’s attractive ridged bark. New growth appears in spring with a particularly delicate, fresh appearance.

The Dawn Redwood has shown wonderful adaptability despite its ancient heritage, growing well in different soil conditions and coping with both moisture and drought once its roots are established. This combination of fascinating history, lovely looks, and vigorous growth makes it highly valued in gardens, parks, and tree collections throughout Britain, giving gardeners the chance to grow their own living fossil.

The bright green needles have a light, feathery quality that’s quite like the Coastal Redwood in appearance. Autumn brings a wonderful display as the foliage shifts to brilliant orange and brown tones.

Approximately 40/60cm tall supplied in a 2 litre pot.
