Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Lutea’, also known as Japanese cypress, originates from Japan and stands out as one of the most striking cultivars available.
This particular variety is prized for its bright golden-yellow needles, which become increasingly brilliant when grown in full sunlight. The scale-like foliage forms attractive fan-shaped clusters, creating a wonderfully dense and textured look.
As a dwarf variety, ‘Nana Lutea’ has a slow growth habit and stays nicely compact. Over time, it develops into a rounded, globe-shaped shrub. While it can eventually reach several feet tall after many years, its leisurely growth means it stays small and manageable for ages.
This Chamaecyparis obtusa cultivar needs well-draining soil and can cope with various soil conditions provided they don’t stay waterlogged. Whilst it loves full sun, which brings out the best golden tones, it also performs well in partial shade.
The brilliant golden colour and neat compact habit make ‘Nana Lutea’ perfect for brightening up rock gardens, borders, or growing as a feature plant in pots and containers. It works brilliantly in mixed plantings where it creates lovely colour contrasts with neighbouring plants.
‘Nana Lutea’ is quite easy to look after and seldom needs pruning thanks to its naturally slow growth. Water regularly whilst establishing and during dry periods, but avoid waterlogged conditions.
Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Lutea’ is very hardy and can withstand cold temperatures down to -20C.
