Teddy Bear Hinoki Cypress *Chamaecyparis obtusa* ‘Teddy Bear’ is a charming dwarf conifer that adds wonderful texture and character to gardens. This compact evergreen grows slowly into a neat, rounded mound with dense, feathery foliage that’s soft to touch. The tiny scale-like leaves show off a lovely deep green colour that stays vibrant all year round, just like its cuddly namesake suggests.

This lovely shrub grows to around 3-4 feet tall and wide when fully grown, which makes it brilliant for smaller gardens, rockeries, or pots. Its neat size and easy-going nature suit gardeners who want something attractive without too much fuss. The soft, rounded form works well in garden schemes, providing a nice contrast to sharper, more formal plantings.

This conifer works a treat in miniature garden settings or Japanese-inspired designs. Since it grows quite slowly, you won’t need to worry about it taking over your space too quickly, so you can enjoy its sweet appearance for years to come. Adding this lovely little conifer to your garden gives you something special to look at throughout the seasons.

Caring for Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Teddy Bear’ is relatively straightforward. Plant it in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade, ensuring it gets at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. It prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil but can adapt to various soil types as long as they’re not waterlogged. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system, then reduce watering as it matures. This plant is drought-tolerant once established but appreciates occasional deep watering during dry spells. Pruning is generally not necessary, but you can lightly trim it in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape if desired. Feed annually in spring with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser formulated for conifers. Keep an eye out for pests like spider mites, especially during hot, dry weather, and treat promptly if spotted. Teddy Bear Hinoki Cypress is generally disease-resistant but may occasionally suffer from root rot if overwatered.
