Pinus armandii is commonly known as Chinese White Pine. Whilst reasonably rare in the UK this medium-sized coniferous tree grows well in our climate. Can be grown as an ornamental tree in the garden or as a bonsai. Originating from the mountains of southwestern China, this hardy species thrives in a variety of environments and elevations. Its adaptability ensures it can flourish in diverse landscapes.
Drooping glaucous leaves, up to 15cm long, are borne in groups of five from a young age.
Pinus armandii is a medium to large evergreen tree that typically reaches heights of 20 to 50 meters (66 to 164 feet). It has a conical or columnar shape with a straight trunk and dense, spreading branches.
The needles of Pinus armandii are needle-like and arranged in bundles of five. They are slender, dark green, and measure about 10 to 15 centimetres (4 to 6 inches) in length.
The cones of this pine tree are relatively large, measuring 10 to 20 centimetres (4 to 8 inches) in length. They have a cylindrical shape and are often tinged with purple when immature. As they mature, the cones turn brown and release seeds.
Armand pine prefers well-drained, acidic soils and is commonly found in mixed forests with other conifers and broadleaf trees.
Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters (-15C to -10C)
