The Japanese Red Cedar *Cryptomeria japonica* is a grand conifer that grows to remarkable heights of 30 to 50 metres (98 to 164 feet), sometimes even taller at full maturity. This impressive tree features a straight trunk topped with a conical or pyramid-shaped crown. Its distinctive reddish-brown bark strips away to show smooth, red inner bark beneath.
*Cryptomeria japonica* produces needle-like foliage that grows in spirals around each branch. The dark green leaves give off a lovely scent when you crush them. What makes this cedar different from other conifers is that its leaves look more like scales than traditional needles.
These robust trees do well in well-drained soil and like full sun or partial shade. Once they get going, Japanese Red Cedars are quite easy to look after. Just water them regularly when it’s dry and give them the odd prune to keep their shape and size in check. Young trees grow quickly, which makes them great for replanting projects.
In gardens, Japanese Red Cedars work well as feature trees, windbreaks, or privacy screens thanks to their thick foliage. The red bark looks brilliant against the rich green leaves, adding real character to garden settings.
Back in Japan, this cedar holds special meaning and has long been used in traditional building and woodwork. People value the timber for being tough and rot-resistant.

Seeds
We generally send seeds out via Royal Mail Second Class. It’s the safest and easiest way to deliver seeds.
Young Trees
Young trees (Less than 1.2m) will generally be sent via Evri.
Larger quantities of young trees will be sent via ParcelForce or pallet courier..
Huge Trees
Some of our huge trees are too tall to be sent via a courier. They are generally only available for collection from our nursery, local delivery or via occasionally pallet courier. This will be shown on the individual product page.
