The Japanese Red Cedar Cryptomeria japonica is a stunning tall tree that grows to impressive heights, usually between 30 to 50 metres (98 to 164 feet) and sometimes even taller once fully grown. This tree has a straight trunk with a cone-shaped crown, and its bark is reddish-brown, peeling away in strips to show smooth, reddish bark underneath.
The leaves of Cryptomeria japonica are needle-shaped and grow in spirals around the branches. These dark green leaves smell lovely when you crush them. What’s interesting is that unlike most conifers, the Japanese Red Cedar’s leaves look more like scales than typical needles.
Japanese Red Cedars are tough trees that do well in well-drained soil and like full sun to partial shade. Once they get going, they’re quite easy to look after, just needing regular water when it’s dry and the odd bit of pruning to keep them in shape. They grow quickly when young, which makes them great for replanting projects.
In gardens, Japanese Red Cedars are popular for both their looks and timber quality. You can plant them as feature trees, windbreaks, or privacy screens thanks to their thick foliage. The reddish bark looks brilliant against the rich green leaves in garden settings.
In Japan, the Japanese Red Cedar means a lot culturally and gets used in traditional building and making wooden items. The wood is valued for being long-lasting and rot-resistant.

Seeds
We generally send seeds out via Royal Mail Second Class. It’s the safest and easiest way to deliver seeds.
Young Trees
Young trees (Less than 1.2m) will generally be sent via Evri.
Larger quantities of young trees will be sent via ParcelForce or pallet courier..
Huge Trees
Some of our huge trees are too tall to be sent via a courier. They are generally only available for collection from our nursery, local delivery or via occasionally pallet courier. This will be shown on the individual product page.
