The Japanese Red Cedar Cryptomeria japonica is a grand, tall-growing tree that reaches remarkable heights of 30 to 50 metres (98 to 164 feet), sometimes growing even taller at maturity. This tree features an upright trunk with a cone-shaped crown, whilst its reddish-brown bark strips away to show smooth, red inner bark beneath.
The leaves of Cryptomeria japonica are needle-shaped and grow in spirals around each branch. These dark green leaves give off a lovely scent when crushed. What sets this tree apart from other conifers is that its leaves look more like scales than typical needles.
Japanese Red Cedars are tough trees that do well in well-draining soil and like full sun or light shade. Once they’re settled in, they don’t need much fuss – just regular watering when it’s dry and the odd bit of pruning to keep their shape and size in check. These trees grow quite quickly when young, which makes them perfect for woodland restoration work.
For garden use, Japanese Red Cedars work brilliantly as feature trees, shelter belts, or privacy hedging thanks to their thick foliage. The red bark looks lovely against the deep green leaves, creating an attractive display in gardens.
Back in Japan, this tree holds special meaning and has long been used in traditional building work and crafting wooden items. The timber is valued for being long-lasting and rot-resistant.

Seeds
We generally send seeds out via Royal Mail Second Class. It’s the safest and easiest way to deliver seeds.
Young Trees
Young trees (Less than 1.2m) will generally be sent via Evri.
Larger quantities of young trees will be sent via ParcelForce or pallet courier..
Huge Trees
Some of our huge trees are too tall to be sent via a courier. They are generally only available for collection from our nursery, local delivery or via occasionally pallet courier. This will be shown on the individual product page.
