Japanese Red Cedar *Cryptomeria japonica* ‘Elegans’ is a delightful evergreen conifer that puts on a seasonal colour show throughout the year. This lovely tree starts with blue-green foliage in spring, develops into rich green during summer, then transforms to beautiful burgundy-purple and rusty-red tones in autumn and winter.
The soft-textured leaves feel lovely to the touch, whilst the horizontal branches create an elegant drooping effect at their tips. After twenty years, ‘Elegans’ typically reaches 4-5 metres tall with a spread of about 1.5 metres. It grows best in moist but well-draining soil and happily tolerates both sunny and partially shaded spots.
**Foliage Color Change**
The seasonal colour changes are truly the star feature of ‘Elegans’. The bright green spring and summer foliage shifts to bronze or purplish shades during autumn and winter months.
**Growth Habit**
Young plants tend to have a shrubby, slightly irregular shape, but develop a more tree-like form as they mature. In ideal conditions over time, heights can reach 10-15 metres, though many remain smaller, particularly with regular pruning.
**Use in Gardens**
The distinctive texture and colour-changing foliage make *Cryptomeria japonica* ‘Elegans’ a favourite for gardens. It works brilliantly as a specimen tree or as part of hedging and screening.
**Care**
Most Cryptomeria varieties prefer well-draining soil and grow well in full sun to partial shade. Once settled, it handles dry periods quite well, though regular watering helps during drought, especially for younger plants. It grows to 4m tall and has weak, shallow roots that require a sheltered location
**Hardiness**
Generally hardy, though young plants can be more sensitive to severe cold. Mature specimens are hardy throughout Britain. (-20C to -15C)
**Pruning**
‘Elegans’ can be pruned to keep a particular shape or size, though it’s not essential. If you choose to prune, late winter or early spring works best.

Seeds
We generally send seeds out via Royal Mail Second Class. It’s the safest and easiest way to deliver seeds.
Young Trees
Young trees (Less than 1.2m) will generally be sent via Evri.
Larger quantities of young trees will be sent via ParcelForce or pallet courier..
Huge Trees
Some of our huge trees are too tall to be sent via a courier. They are generally only available for collection from our nursery, local delivery or via occasionally pallet courier. This will be shown on the individual product page.
