Sekkan-sugi Japanese Red Cedar *Cryptomeria japonica* ‘Sekkan-sugi’ is a special variety of the Japanese Red Cedar, sometimes called Sugi. This cultivar stands out thanks to its bright golden-yellow foliage that gives it real character. The name “Sekkan-sugi” means “Snow Crown Cedar,” which comes from how the golden leaves can look like snow covering the branches. This tree grows in a neat pyramid shape and can reach 20 to 30 metres tall when fully grown.
The golden-yellow foliage is what makes ‘Sekkan-sugi’ so special. Its small, scale-like needles grow in flat sprays, and the bright colouring really shows up in the fresh growth during spring and summer. When autumn comes around, the foliage often shifts to bronze or copper shades before turning reddish-brown through winter.
This Japanese Red Cedar variety is quite tough and does well in free-draining soil with full sun or some shade. It’s pretty easy to look after, which is why many gardeners like it. Regular watering and the odd bit of pruning to keep it tidy are usually all it needs.
‘Sekkan-sugi’ works brilliantly as a feature tree in gardens because of its eye-catching foliage. You can use it as a single specimen, plant several for screening, or add it to mixed plantings where its unusual colour really makes a statement.

Seeds
We generally send seeds out via Royal Mail Second Class. It’s the safest and easiest way to deliver seeds.
Young Trees
Young trees (Less than 1.2m) will generally be sent via Evri.
Larger quantities of young trees will be sent via ParcelForce or pallet courier..
Huge Trees
Some of our huge trees are too tall to be sent via a courier. They are generally only available for collection from our nursery, local delivery or via occasionally pallet courier. This will be shown on the individual product page.
