Castlewellan Gold Leylandii *Cuppressocyparis leylandii* is a superb choice for gardeners wanting to bring vibrant colour to their outdoor spaces. This striking variety catches the eye with its brilliant golden-yellow foliage that really lights up, particularly in sunlight. It’s perfect for anyone wanting to establish a colourful hedge or screen in double-quick time.

This variety shares the rapid growth characteristic of all Leylandii, putting on up to 3 metres annually in its early years. Without regular maintenance, it can easily exceed 20 metres in height. This speedy development is both its greatest asset and its main drawback. Whilst excellent for fast screening, it demands consistent trimming to prevent it getting out of hand.

The dense, soft foliage emerges as brilliant golden-yellow in spring, maturing to deeper gold tones through the growing season. This striking colour creates wonderful contrast alongside other green garden plants. The thick growth offers excellent habitat for wildlife, particularly birds, making it ideal for gardeners wanting to encourage local wildlife.

Castlewellan Gold Leylandii works brilliantly in many situations. Plant it for formal hedging, privacy screening, or windbreak creation. It’s also great at cutting down noise pollution, which explains its popularity in town and suburban gardens. As single specimens, these trees create impressive vertical features in bigger gardens.

This variety is incredibly robust. It thrives right across Britain and handles various soil conditions well. It also stands up to coastal exposure, making it suitable for seaside gardens where other plants often fail.

Castlewellan Gold originated in Northern Ireland during the 1960s and has grown popular with gardeners seeking Leylandii’s rapid growth combined with striking colour.

For anyone wanting a speedy evergreen screen or hedge with golden appeal, Castlewellan Gold Leylandii takes some beating. It’s quick, resilient, and does the job well. Just bear in mind that fast growth means regular maintenance – you’ll need to stay on top of trimming to control it properly. If you’re prepared for this commitment, Castlewellan Gold makes an excellent garden addition, delivering continuous colour, privacy, and protection.

Leylandii ‘Castlewellan Gold’ is fairly easy to care for, but it does need regular attention to keep it in shape. It grows best in full sun, which brings out its golden colour, but can tolerate partial shade. It isn’t fussy about soil type, as long as it’s well-drained. When first planted, water regularly to help it establish. Once settled, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Feed annually with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring. The key to managing ‘Castlewellan Gold’ is regular pruning. Trim at least once a year, preferably twice, to maintain the desired size and shape. Don’t let it get too tall before trimming, as it won’t regrow from old wood.
