Dawn Redwood – Metasequoia glyptostroboides ‘Miss Grace’ is a real gem for gardens looking for something a little different. This top-grafted tree has a lovely weeping shape, with slender branches that arch and trail downwards, giving it a graceful appearance. The feathery, bright green leaves are soft to the touch and turn a warm bronze in autumn, bringing a splash of colour before falling to the ground. The shape of ‘Miss Grace’ makes it a good choice for smaller spaces or as a striking feature in larger gardens.

The Dawn Redwood has an interesting history. It was thought to be extinct until the 1940s when it was found growing in China. Since then, gardeners around the world have enjoyed its gentle beauty. ‘Miss Grace’ is a special variety, chosen for its elegant habit and compact size. Unlike the wild species which can grow very tall, ‘Miss Grace’ stays much smaller and is easy to fit into most gardens.

One of the best things about ‘Miss Grace’ is how it changes with the seasons. In spring and summer, the fresh green leaves give a soft, calming look. As autumn approaches, the tree puts on a show with its coppery tones. Even in winter, when the leaves have dropped, the shape of the branches stands out, adding interest to bare beds. This weeping form catches the light and draws the eye, especially when planted near water or as part of a mixed border.

This tree is quite easy to care for and suits many different garden styles. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and will do well in sun or light shade. Once settled, it can cope with short dry spells but will be happiest with regular moisture. ‘Miss Grace’ is also quite tough and can handle cold winters without trouble. Its slow growth makes it simple to keep tidy, and it rarely needs much pruning apart from removing any dead or damaged branches.
