Dawn Redwood ‘Sheridan Spire’ – Metasequoia glyptostroboides is a distinctive columnar selection of this ancient deciduous conifer, prized for its remarkably narrow habit and elegant architectural form. This cultivar develops into a slender, upright spire with tightly held branches that create a formal, pencil-like silhouette in the garden. The soft, feathery foliage emerges bright green in spring, deepening through summer before transforming into warm russet and bronze tones in autumn. Unlike many conifers, this tree sheds its needles each winter, providing year-round interest through its changing seasonal displays and attractive reddish-brown bark that becomes deeply furrowed with age.

The compact growth habit of ‘Sheridan Spire’ makes it particularly valuable for smaller gardens where space is at a premium, or for creating vertical accents without overwhelming neighbouring plants. Its narrow spread allows it to fit comfortably into borders, alongside driveways, or as a striking focal point in formal planting schemes. The tree maintains its columnar shape naturally without requiring pruning, though it can be shaped if desired. This makes it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking low-maintenance structural planting with strong visual impact throughout the year.

Dawn Redwoods are remarkably adaptable trees that thrive in a wide range of conditions. They perform best in fertile, moisture-retentive soil and tolerate both full sun and partial shade, though growth will be more vigorous in brighter positions. These trees have a particular affinity for damp conditions and will flourish near ponds, streams, or in areas with naturally high water tables. The fibrous root system is non-invasive, making ‘Sheridan Spire’ suitable for planting relatively close to buildings and paved areas without concern for structural damage.

This cultivar works beautifully in both contemporary and traditional garden settings. Plant it as a sentinel beside entrances, use multiple specimens to create rhythmic vertical accents along pathways, or position it as a living sculpture in gravel gardens. The narrow form also makes it ideal for avenue planting where space between trees is limited. ‘Sheridan Spire’ combines particularly well with ornamental grasses, ferns, and shade-tolerant perennials that appreciate the dappled light beneath its canopy.

Care Guide

Plant in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Dawn Redwoods prefer slightly acidic to neutral conditions but will tolerate a range of soil types provided they don’t dry out completely during establishment. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons, particularly during dry spells, to encourage deep root development.

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Mulch around the base with organic matter such as well-rotted compost or bark chips to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch clear of the trunk itself.

Pruning is rarely necessary as the tree naturally maintains its columnar shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter when the tree is dormant. Avoid heavy pruning as this can spoil the elegant form.

Dawn Redwoods are generally pest and disease resistant. They tolerate urban pollution well and are hardy throughout most regions, withstanding winter temperatures down to -20°C once established. Protect young trees from strong winds during their first few years until the root system has developed sufficiently.
