Deodar Cedar ‘Pendula’ – Cedrus deodara is a graceful weeping conifer that brings architectural elegance to gardens through its distinctive cascading habit. This beautiful cultivar features soft, blue-green needles that drape downwards from its branches, creating a living sculpture that evolves as the tree matures. The weeping form develops naturally without requiring special training, making it an excellent choice for creating focal points in borders, alongside water features, or as a specimen plant in lawns.

The silvery-blue foliage of this weeping cedar provides year-round interest, with new growth emerging in spring with a brighter, more vibrant colour before maturing to the characteristic blue-green shade. The needles are longer and more flexible than those of other cedar species, contributing to the graceful, flowing appearance. As the tree grows, its branches sweep downwards and outwards, eventually forming a distinctive silhouette that becomes more pronounced with age.

This cultivar thrives in well-drained soil and prefers a sunny position, though it will tolerate partial shade. Once established, Deodar Cedar ‘Pendula’ shows good drought tolerance, though regular watering during extended dry periods will help maintain the best foliage colour. The tree performs well in most soil types provided drainage is adequate, as waterlogged conditions can lead to root problems.

When planting, choose a location that allows the weeping branches to develop freely without obstruction. The tree benefits from shelter from strong winds, particularly when young, as this helps protect the developing canopy. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth, and maintain a mulch layer around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds whilst keeping the mulch away from direct contact with the trunk.

Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead or damaged branches, though you may wish to remove lower branches as the tree matures to create clearance beneath the canopy. Any pruning should be carried out in late summer to early autumn to minimise sap bleeding. The natural weeping habit means the tree largely maintains its own shape without intervention.

Deodar Cedar ‘Pendula’ works beautifully in contemporary and traditional garden settings alike. Its elegant form complements ornamental grasses, heathers, and other evergreens, whilst providing a striking contrast to deciduous shrubs and perennials. The tree’s relatively compact nature compared to the species makes it suitable for medium-sized gardens where space is at a premium but impact is desired.

This conifer is generally pest and disease resistant, though occasional aphid infestations may occur on new growth. Good air circulation and avoiding overhead watering help prevent fungal issues. The tree is fully hardy and withstands cold winters without protection, making it reliable across all regions with a British climate.
