The English Holly Ilex aquifolium, measuring 60-80cm in a 2-litre pot, is a lovely specimen that’s ready to establish itself in your garden. This particular size gives your holly an excellent foundation, perfect for creating an impressive hedge or introducing some permanent foliage to your planting areas. English Holly remains a quintessential British favourite, renowned for its sharp, lustrous dark green leaves that bring festive cheer during the winter months. As this young plant matures, it’ll form that thick, compact growth pattern that makes holly superb for screening and creating privacy from prying eyes.
Though it’s just starting out, this holly has the potential to develop into a sizeable shrub or modest tree, possibly growing up to 15 metres given free rein – but no worries, regular trimming keeps it perfectly manageable. During late spring, tiny white blooms appear which, provided you have male and female specimens nearby, transform into those famous scarlet berries come autumn. These berries provide essential nourishment for garden birds during the harsh winter months when natural food sources become scarce.
Holly’s incredibly hardy, tolerating various soil conditions and situations. As a native species, it thrives in our weather and plays a vital role in supporting indigenous wildlife. Birds favour its dense branches for nesting sites, and it serves as a host plant for holly blue butterflies.
Position your holly in sunny or partially shaded spots with good drainage. It adapts to most soil types though shows a preference for slightly acidic conditions. Keep well-watered whilst establishing, particularly through dry periods. An annual application of general-purpose fertiliser each spring maintains healthy growth. Trim during winter or early spring to maintain desired shape. Bear in mind that only female specimens bear berries, requiring a male plant close by for successful pollination.
