Chestnut Leaf Holly Ilex × koehneana ‘Chestnut Leaf’ is an eye-catching evergreen that adds an unusual touch to gardens. This holly hybrid reaches 4-8 metres tall and spreads 3-5 metres wide as it matures, developing into a large shrub or small tree with an upright, cone-shaped form.
The standout feature of ‘Chestnut Leaf’ is definitely its foliage. The leaves grow quite large, reaching up to 15cm in length, and show off a shiny, dark green colour with heavily serrated edges that look remarkably like chestnut leaves. This unusual leaf form makes it quite different from typical hollies and creates bold texture in the garden throughout the year.
Small, subtle white flowers appear in late spring. Since this variety is female, it needs a male holly planted nearby to produce fruit. When pollination occurs, bright red berries develop in autumn and winter, making a lovely contrast with the dark leaves and bringing colour to winter gardens.
‘Chestnut Leaf’ works well in various garden situations despite its substantial size. It’s perfect as a standalone feature plant, where its unusual leaves create a strong focal point in mixed plantings or on lawns. You can also use it for hedging or screening purposes, as its thick growth and broad leaves form an effective privacy screen. In woodland settings, it provides structure and maintains interest all year round.
Once settled in, this holly needs fairly little attention. It copes with different soil types and pH levels, though it does best in slightly acidic ground. It’s quite tough too, handling urban pollution and coastal environments well, which makes it suitable for many different garden situations.
‘Chestnut Leaf’ also supports local wildlife well. Its thick growth gives birds somewhere to shelter, while the berries provide winter food for birds when they do appear.
