The Creeping Juniper ‘Limeglow’ *Juniperus horizontalis* is a brilliant evergreen shrub that adds vibrant colour to gardens throughout the year. This particular variety catches the eye with its glowing lime-green needles that look especially bright during spring and summer months. It’s a low, spreading plant that creates thick ground cover, ideal for gardeners wanting something colourful and different.
This juniper grows quite slowly, reaching just 10-15 cm tall but spreading 1-1.5 metres wide over a decade. Its creeping habit makes it versatile for various garden spots – try it on slopes, in rockeries, at the front of borders, or trailing from pots. The bright lime foliage works brilliantly year-round and looks fantastic next to darker plants or against stone and gravel features.
The real benefit of this juniper is how it lifts the mood of any garden space. That zesty lime colour brings freshness to planting schemes and works particularly well in our British climate, where it provides cheerful colour even during dull winter months. The low, mat-forming growth also creates lovely texture and structure in garden designs.
Many gardeners pick ‘Limeglow’ because it’s tough and reliable. After it settles in, it handles different soil types well and puts up with dry spells and city pollution. This makes it perfect for easy-care gardens or tricky areas where other plants might fail. It’s also naturally resistant to most problems, so maintenance stays minimal.
Caring for Creeping Juniper ‘Limeglow’ is straightforward, which is great news for gardeners. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun to partial shade – full sun will help maintain the best lime-green colour. It prefers well-drained soil but can adapt to various soil types, including poor or rocky soils. Water regularly when it’s first planted to help it establish. Once settled, it’s very drought-tolerant and rarely needs watering except in prolonged dry spells. You don’t need to feed it often – a light application of slow-release fertiliser in spring is enough. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can trim it lightly to maintain its shape if needed. Keep an eye out for any signs of browning or dieback, which could indicate stress. ‘Limeglow’ is very hardy and can cope with winters without extra protection, even in exposed or coastal areas.
