The European Larch Larix decidua offers wonderful seasonal variety to gardens. This graceful conifer is unusual because it sheds its needles each winter, after creating a stunning autumn display of golden yellow. Come spring, soft lime-green needles appear with a delicate, feathery texture that gives the tree an open, airy look.

Pretty pink-purple cones emerge in spring, sitting upright along the branches like small roses. They turn brown as they ripen and stay attractive through the bare winter months. The tree grows with naturally layered branches in a pyramid form, developing around a straight main trunk.

As the bark matures, it becomes deeply grooved with attractive warm brown colouring. The branches provide good nesting spots for birds, and the bare winter outline reveals the tree’s elegant structure beautifully.

While the Larch grows at a good pace, it maintains a refined appearance that won’t dominate a garden space. Every season offers something special – spring’s tender new growth, summer’s soft green foliage, autumn’s golden colour and winter’s striking bare form.

Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade with soil that drains well for your Larch. It handles cold weather very well but dislikes waterlogged conditions. After it settles in, it needs minimal care apart from cutting out any dead branches in late winter. The autumn needle drop is perfectly normal and makes useful mulch around the base.
