The Dawn Redwood *Metasequoia glyptostroboides* ‘Golden Oji’ or ‘Goldrush’ creates a brilliant focal point in gardens with its bright golden-yellow leaves that bring warmth and light to any space. The foliage provides beautiful contrast against surrounding green plants and transforms into gorgeous orange-brown shades in autumn, giving months of changing colour. This variety began as a seedling in Japan and grows more slowly than the standard species, developing into an impressive tree that reaches 50 feet tall – perfect for adding both colour and height to gardens.

These trees are deciduous, which means they shed their leaves in late autumn and stay bare through winter until early spring. This sets them apart from other redwoods and creates an interesting year-round display.

The growing season starts with bright, golden-yellow feathery foliage emerging on the branches. These tender leaves need protection from harsh sun, so a spot with filtered light or partial shade works best. When positioned correctly, the leaves keep their brilliant golden colour all summer long, casting lovely dappled shadows below. Autumn is when the tree really shines, with the whole canopy glowing in warm amber and bronze colours before the leaves drop.

Winter shows off another side of the tree’s beauty, revealing its graceful structure and attractive ridged bark. The branches naturally grow upwards in a pyramid shape, making a bold outline against winter skies. This tidy, structured form makes it suitable for smaller gardens too.

Dawn Redwood ‘Golden Oji’ is straightforward to grow and look after. They like soil that holds moisture but will adapt to most conditions once settled in. Plant in bright indirect light or partial shade, **avoiding direct sun which can damage the distinctive golden foliage of ‘Golden Oji’. Consider ‘Amber Glow’ if you want to plant in direct sun.** Pick a location with room for their mature size. They’re hardy across Britain and handle windy spots well. Water consistently during the first few years and apply thick mulch around the base each spring. Regular pruning isn’t necessary as they naturally develop an attractive shape.
