The Dawn Redwood adds prehistoric charm to gardens. Despite its evergreen appearance, this fascinating tree is deciduous, creating stunning displays of copper and gold tones in autumn before shedding its delicate, needle-like foliage.
Come spring, vibrant green leaves appear, forming an open, graceful canopy. The tree develops rapidly, naturally creating a tidy conical form without requiring pruning. Its trunk showcases attractive reddish-brown bark that strips away in sections, providing visual appeal during winter months when branches stand bare.
While it can grow quite large eventually, reaching full size takes decades. In typical gardens, it remains a manageable medium-sized specimen for years. Its compact, vertical growth habit means it won’t spread extensively, suiting tighter spaces well.
Scientists believed this tree had vanished until the 1940s discovery of specimens in China. Today it serves as an excellent garden choice, offering a glimpse of prehistoric times in contemporary settings. The delicate, fern-like leaves flutter attractively in summer winds, providing dappled shade below.
Position your Dawn Redwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides in decent garden soil with good sun or partial shade. While it prefers moist conditions, it adapts to most locations once established. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a good root system. After that, it needs little attention beyond removing any dead wood in late winter. A yearly mulch keeps it happy, and it rarely suffers from pests or diseases in our climate.
