The Japanese White Pine ‘Blue Lou’ *Pinus parviflora* is a beautiful dwarf evergreen that provides year-round interest in gardens. This compact variety develops a mounding habit that’s ideal for smaller gardens, slowly forming a dense, rounded shape. The foliage displays an attractive light blue-green colour, creating a fluffy, cloud-like effect that contrasts nicely with darker garden plants. The needles grow in bundles of five and have a slight twist, adding interesting texture to the plant. Reaching just 1 metre in height and spread after 10 years, this pine works wonderfully in rock gardens, raised beds, or pots. It’s an excellent option for those wanting something attractive throughout the seasons with minimal maintenance. The blue-tinted foliage looks especially striking when highlighted by winter frost or morning dew.

This particular cultivar was selected for its manageable size and attractive blue colouring, making it far better suited to gardens than the larger species found in the wild.

‘Blue Lou’ is quite easy to grow in British gardens. Plant it in full sun to get the best blue colour in the needles, though it will cope with light shade. The soil should be well-drained – adding grit to heavy clay soils helps. Once established, it’s fairly drought tolerant but water regularly in the first year. There’s no need for regular pruning, though you can remove any dead or damaged branches in early spring. A yearly feed with a general fertiliser in spring will keep it happy.
