Japanese White Pine ‘Fukai’ Pinus parviflora ‘Fukai’ is a beautiful variegated conifer that adds elegance and oriental appeal to any garden. It likes well-draining, slightly acidic soil but can cope with different soil types as long as they don’t get waterlogged. Water regularly during its first growing season to build strong roots, then cut back watering as it settles in. Once established, it handles dry spells quite well but likes the odd deep watering during hot, dry periods. Pruning isn’t usually needed, but you can remove dead or damaged branches in late winter if required. To keep its compact shape, you can pinch off new growth (candles) in spring. Feed once a year in early spring with slow-release, balanced fertiliser made for conifers. Watch out for pests like spider mites or pine sawflies, and treat quickly if you spot them. ‘Fukai’ usually resists disease well but might occasionally get root rot if watered too much.
