The Maritime Pine *Pinus pinaster* is a stunning evergreen that adds Mediterranean flair to gardens and coastal areas. This impressive pine stands out with its broad, umbrella-shaped crown sitting on top of a tall, upright trunk. The bark really catches the eye as it ages, forming deep grooves and turning a lovely reddish-brown colour. The needles are long, rigid, and dark green, arranged in pairs to form a thick canopy that looks good all year round and offers plenty of shelter.
In gardens, Maritime Pine usually reaches 20-30 metres tall, though it can grow up to 40 metres in its natural environment. It grows quite quickly for a pine, so you won’t be waiting forever to see its full glory. The spreading branches can span 6-10 metres across, making it perfect for bigger gardens or as a real showstopper in parks and larger spaces.
The cones are one of this pine’s best features. They’re big, shiny, and can grow up to 20 cm long, looking attractive throughout the year. These cones often stay on the tree for years, which adds to its decorative appeal. The tree also gives off a lovely resinous scent that brings extra sensory pleasure to your garden.
Many gardeners pick the Maritime Pine because it looks fantastic and copes brilliantly with difficult growing conditions, especially near the coast. It handles salt spray and strong winds really well, making it spot-on for seaside gardens. Once it’s settled in, it’s pretty good with drought too, which helps in areas with water limits or low-maintenance gardens.
This pine fits into many different garden styles, particularly coastal or Mediterranean themes. It makes a superb specimen tree, works as a natural windbreak, or provides a backdrop for other plants. Its ability to grow in poor, sandy soil makes it brilliant for holding together dunes or slopes in coastal spots.
If you love wildlife, you’ll be pleased to know that Maritime Pine offers shelter and nesting places for birds. The seeds inside the cones also feed various creatures, including squirrels and different bird species.
If you want a tree that looks fantastic year-round and handles tough conditions, the Maritime Pine is a brilliant pick. It keeps its striking looks through every season, giving constant colour, texture, and structure to your garden.
Caring for a Maritime Pine is relatively straightforward, especially once established. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but can adapt to various soil types, including poor, sandy soils. Water regularly when it’s first planted to help it establish. Once settled, it’s quite drought-tolerant but will appreciate deep watering during prolonged dry spells, especially in its first few years. You don’t need to feed it often – a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring is enough if the soil is particularly poor. Pruning isn’t necessary to maintain its shape, but you can remove any dead or damaged branches if needed. Keep an eye out for any signs of needle browning or dieback, which could indicate stress or disease. The Maritime Pine is hardy in most parts of Britain but may appreciate some shelter from strong winds in very exposed inland sites.
