The Stone Pine *Pinus pinea*, sometimes called the Umbrella Pine or Italian Stone Pine, is a stunning evergreen that brings a taste of the Mediterranean to British gardens. This slow-growing pine eventually reaches 15-25 metres tall, forming its famous flat-topped, umbrella-shaped crown over many years. The bark becomes thick and deeply grooved with age, developing attractive reddish-brown tones. Long needles, roughly 10-20 cm in length, grow in pairs to create a dense, dark green canopy that offers wonderful shade.

The tree’s large, egg-shaped cones are particularly special, taking three years to fully ripen. Inside these cones are the edible pine nuts beloved in Mediterranean cooking. You’ll need patience though – Stone Pines don’t start producing cones until they’re around 20 years old, so it’s definitely a tree for the future. In Mediterranean countries, they’re often grown commercially in groves specifically for nut harvesting.

Stone Pines cope brilliantly with coastal conditions, handling salt spray and strong winds with ease, which makes them perfect for seaside gardens. They’re also remarkably drought-resistant once settled in, loving hot, dry summers. In Britain, they do best in warmer regions, especially southern areas, where they make impressive feature trees in spacious gardens or parks.

Plant your Stone Pine in full sun and well-drained soil. It prefers sandy or gravelly soils and doesn’t tolerate waterlogged conditions. Once established, it’s very drought-tolerant and requires little watering. Pruning is generally unnecessary except to remove dead or damaged branches. Be aware that this tree needs plenty of space to develop its full, characteristic shape. In colder areas of the UK, it may benefit from some protection from harsh winter winds, especially when young.
