Pinus yunnanensis

£15.70

A swiftly growing evergreen coniferous tree, capable of attaining a height of 30 meters (100 feet). In its youth, the bark displays a smooth texture and a grey-brown hue, but as it ages, it develops vertical fissures and a scaly appearance. This tree assumes a broadly conical canopy, with needles typically arranged in pairs, occasionally in groups of three, at the tips of its branches. These needles can reach lengths of up to 30 centimetres (12 inches) and drape gracefully from the tree, sporting a pale green hue.

Yunnan Pine *Pinus yunnanensis* is a stunning conifer that comes from the mountainous areas of southwest China. This quick-growing tree stands out for its graceful shape and remarkable long needles that can stretch up to 30cm, giving it a gentle, sweeping look. When young, the Yunnan Pine forms a wide, pyramid-like outline, but as it gets older it develops a more spreading, rounded top. The bark is greyish-brown with deep grooves, which adds lovely texture to gardens. During spring, the male cones release plenty of yellow pollen, whilst the female cones take two years to fully develop, beginning green before turning to deep brown.

This pine adapts well to different soil conditions and copes with both cold weather and dry spells, which makes it well-suited for various garden situations.

*Pinus yunnanensis* reaches considerable heights, making it perfect as a feature tree for larger gardens or parks. Its quick growth means it soon becomes an eye-catching centrepiece or useful windbreak. Brought to Western gardening in the early 1900s, the Yunnan Pine has become a treasured choice for many botanical gardens and spacious gardens, bringing exotic appeal and interest throughout the year.

*Pinus yunnanensis* needs little fuss once it’s settled in. It likes full sun and does best in free-draining soil, though it can cope with various soil types, including poor and stony ground. Young trees do well with regular watering for their first few growing seasons, but established trees handle dry conditions quite well. Pruning isn’t usually needed unless you’re taking off dead or damaged branches. If you want to shape the tree, do this in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. This pine generally resists pests and diseases, but watch for typical pine problems like needle blight or bark beetles. Feeding isn’t usually necessary unless your soil is very poor. When planting, think about how big the tree will get and give it plenty of room to grow.
Shield young trees from strong winds until they’re properly established. With the right care, Yunnan Pines can live for many years as an impressive feature in your garden.

*Pinus yunnanensis* suits the British climate well, as it handles both cold winters and mild summers. Hardy throughout most of Britain even during harsh winters (-15C to -10C).
Though Yunnan Pines are tough, young trees might need some protection from severe frost during their first few winters. Cover the tree base with mulch and wrap the trunk with tree wrap or hessian if frost is expected.
