The Stone Pine *Pinus pinea*, sometimes called the Italian Stone Pine, is a lovely Mediterranean tree that brings a bit of continental flair to your garden. This slow-growing evergreen eventually stretches up to 15-25 metres high, developing that distinctive umbrella-shaped crown that makes it such a standout feature. The trunk develops thick, fissured bark that matures to a warm reddish-brown colour over the years. Those long needles, measuring around 10-20 cm and growing in pairs, create a dense dark green canopy that provides brilliant shade during hot summer days.
The impressive oval cones are quite something, taking three full years to mature properly. Inside, you’ll discover those prized pine nuts that chefs love so much. Mind you, patience is key here – these trees won’t start producing cones until they’re roughly 20 years old, the lazy things. They’re hardy specimens though, coping well with coastal conditions and drought once established. In Britain, they thrive best in our warmer southern regions, where they make fantastic focal points in larger gardens or public spaces.
