The Eastern White Pine or Weymouth Pine ‘Blue Shag’ Pinus strobus is a delightful dwarf variety that creates a tidy, globe-shaped mound of silvery blue-green foliage. This petite evergreen develops slowly into a thick, dome-like bush that seldom grows taller or wider than 1 metre, which makes it ideal for compact gardens.

The slender, soft needles display an attractive blue-grey colour and grow in clusters of five, giving the plant a gentle, tactile quality that remains appealing throughout the year. Fresh growth emerges in spring with an especially vivid blue shade, which gradually matures as the months pass.

This small pine works wonderfully in rockeries, mixed plantings or pots. Its tidy, globe-like habit requires no trimming to keep its dense form. The blue-tinged foliage pairs beautifully with other compact conifers and provides striking contrast alongside silver or purple-leafed specimens.

‘Blue Shag’ grows best in well-drained soil in full sun, though it can cope with light shade. While young plants need regular watering to establish, mature specimens are quite drought tolerant. It’s best to plant in a sheltered spot away from strong winds. No pruning is needed as it naturally maintains its rounded shape. A mulch of pine needles or bark helps retain moisture and maintains soil acidity.
