Scots Pine ‘Chantry Blue’ Pinus sylvestris is a beautiful evergreen conifer that adds cool sophistication to gardens. This slow-growing form of our native Scots Pine creates a neat, upright habit, perfect for smaller spaces or as an attractive feature in larger gardens. The variety gets its name from the beautiful blue-green needles that give a cool, peaceful feel to the garden.

‘Chantry Blue’ works brilliantly in rock gardens, mixed planting schemes, or as a single specimen tree. Its manageable size won’t dominate your space, whilst its evergreen foliage provides interest throughout the year. This pine looks particularly striking when grown near plants with different coloured leaves.

Scots Pine has grown naturally in Britain for thousands of years and remains part of our countryside today. The ‘Chantry Blue’ form is a newer selection, valued for its lovely blue-green colour and compact growth habit that suits gardens well.

This pine is tough and versatile, doing well in gardens across the country. It resists most pests and diseases, so it’s quite easy to look after. The thick foliage offers shelter for small birds and insects, helping to support wildlife in your garden.

With age, ‘Chantry Blue’ forms an appealing cone shape that gives structure to planting schemes. Its slow growth means it keeps its compact form for many years without much pruning needed.

Pinus sylvestris ‘Chantry Blue’ is relatively easy to care for. Plant it in well-drained soil in a sunny position. It tolerates a range of soil types but prefers slightly acidic conditions. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter if needed. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. This pine is generally pest and disease-resistant, making it a great choice for gardeners of all skill levels.
