Kotobuki Japanese Black Pine – Pinus thunbergii ‘Kotobuki’ is a distinctive dwarf variety of the Japanese Black Pine that stands out for its unusual form. This evergreen conifer grows slowly, typically reaching 1-2 metres in height after 10 years whilst keeping a tight, upright columnar shape. Its compact nature makes it perfect for smaller gardens, rockeries, or growing in containers. The ‘Kotobuki’ variety is valued for its eye-catching looks, with dense, vertical branches covered in rigid, dark green needles that appear in pairs. The needles are usually 7-12 cm in length and give the tree a bold texture whilst creating a striking architectural feature.

This cultivar differs from the standard species as it seldom develops cones, instead putting all its effort into keeping its neat, narrow form. The bark appears greyish-brown and develops more character as the tree matures, which adds to its appeal. Kotobuki keeps its rich green colour all year round, offering reliable structure to gardens. Its unusual shape makes it perfect as a centrepiece or accent plant, working particularly well in Japanese-inspired gardens or contemporary minimalist designs.

Plant Kotobuki Japanese Black Pine – Pinus thunbergii ‘Kotobuki’ in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. It’s tolerant of a wide range of soil types, including sandy or rocky soils, and can handle coastal conditions. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Pruning is generally unnecessary due to its naturally compact form, but you can remove any damaged or dead branches as needed. Feed sparingly with a slow-release fertiliser formulated for conifers in spring.
