The Bhutan Pine stands out as one of the most elegant pine varieties for garden cultivation. Its lengthy, soft blue-grey needles droop in graceful clusters, producing a lovely weeping habit that moves gently with the wind. Five needles form each bundle, growing to around 20cm in length and giving the tree its characteristic silky texture.

As the tree ages, the bark takes on an appealing grey-brown texture that provides visual interest during winter months. Spring brings fresh shoots with a subtle bluish tinge, followed by elongated cones that hang gracefully downwards. These cones begin green before turning brown and often remain on the branches for several months.

This pine differs from many others in its relaxed, flowing form rather than the stiff appearance typical of the species. It works well in both contemporary and traditional garden settings, making an excellent focal point where its refined silhouette can be properly showcased. The soft cascading foliage catches sunlight beautifully, particularly when lit from behind during late afternoon.

The Bhutan Pine thrives in well-drained soil with full sun exposure, although it can cope with some shade. Young plants require consistent watering whilst establishing, but older trees handle dry conditions well. Allow plenty of room for natural development as it doesn’t take kindly to severe pruning. Annual mulching helps keep soil moist and reduces weeds, though it’s generally an easy-care tree.
