Yunnan Pine 40/60cm (2L)

Pinus yunnanensis

£17.90

A swiftly growing evergreen coniferous tree, capable of attaining a height of 30 meters (100 feet). In its youth, the bark displays a smooth texture and a grey-brown hue, but as it ages, it develops vertical fissures and a scaly appearance. This tree assumes a broadly conical canopy, with needles typically arranged in pairs, occasionally in groups of three, at the tips of its branches. These needles can reach lengths of up to 30 centimetres (12 inches) and drape gracefully from the tree, sporting a pale green hue.

The Yunnan Pine *Pinus yunnanensis* is a magnificent evergreen conifer that brings the beauty of China’s mountainous regions to British gardens. This grand tree is well-known for its strong growth and unique characteristics that change as it matures. While it can reach impressive heights in its native southwestern China, in British conditions it usually grows to 20–30 metres, creating a dominant feature in larger gardens. What makes the Yunnan Pine particularly special is how its crown develops over time – starting as a neat pyramid when young, then broadening into a distinctive flat-topped or umbrella-like shape as it ages. This unusual outline makes it stand out from other pines and adds real character to garden layouts.

The foliage features long, narrow needles, typically grouped in threes, which form a thick, rich canopy of deep green. These needles, often 15-20 cm long, give the tree a graceful, flowing look despite its substantial size.

The bark of *Pinus yunnanensis* brings extra visual appeal, developing deep grooves and attractive colouring that ranges from dark grey to reddish-brown with age. During spring, the tree’s flowering cycle adds further interest, producing small reddish male cones alongside larger female cones that take two years to fully develop. The Yunnan Pine is valued not just for its looks but also for its toughness and adaptability. It grows well in different soil types and, once settled, shows excellent drought resistance. These features, along with its impressive stature, make *Pinus yunnanensis* a superb choice for creating standout features in large gardens, parks, or public spaces, where it can display the splendour of Chinese trees whilst providing structure and year-round appeal.

*Pinus yunnanensis* is relatively low-maintenance once established. It prefers full sun exposure and thrives in well-drained soils, though it can adapt to a variety of soil types, including poor and rocky soils. Young trees benefit from regular watering during their first few growing seasons, but mature trees are quite drought-tolerant. Pruning is generally not necessary unless you’re removing dead or damaged branches. If shaping is desired, do so in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. This pine is generally resistant to pests and diseases, but keep an eye out for common pine issues such as needle blight or bark beetles. Fertilisation is usually not required unless the soil is particularly poor. When planting, consider the tree’s eventual size and provide ample space for growth.
Protect young trees from strong winds until they’re well-established. With proper care, Yunnan Pines can be a long-lived, impressive feature in your garden.

*Pinus yunnanensis* is well-suited for the UK climate, as it can tolerate both cold winters and mild summers. Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters (-15C to -10C).
While Yunnan Pines are hardy, young trees may benefit from protection against severe frost in their first few winters. Cover the base of the tree with mulch and wrap the trunk with tree wrap or burlap if frost is anticipated.
