Chinese Golden Cedar ‘Aurea Nana’ – Platycladus orientalis *’Aurea Nana’* is a lovely dwarf conifer that adds brilliant golden colour to gardens. This small evergreen is valued for its vibrant, golden-yellow foliage that keeps its colour all year round, making a bright focal point in any garden space.
‘Aurea Nana’ grows slowly, usually reaching just 1-1.5 metres tall and wide after 10 years. This petite size makes it ideal for rock gardens, smaller spaces, or growing in containers. Its neat, rounded shape needs little or no pruning, making it perfect for gardeners who want something easy to look after.
The scale-like leaves of ‘Aurea Nana’ add lovely texture to gardens. During winter, the foliage often develops bronze hints, bringing extra colour to your outdoor area. This seasonal change keeps things interesting throughout the year, so your garden looks good even when it’s cold.
Originally from China and Korea, this conifer has been grown for hundreds of years. The ‘Aurea Nana’ variety was chosen for its small size and golden colour. It’s become well-loved in gardens here because it adds bright colour without taking over smaller areas.
Pick ‘Aurea Nana’ to bring some golden warmth to your garden. Its sunny colour can brighten up darker spots or work well alongside plants with deeper green leaves. Whether you grow it on its own, in small groups, or mixed with other plants, this little conifer will definitely stand out and make people smile.
‘Aurea Nana’ is very tough and handles cold winters well, surviving temperatures down to -20C.
Chinese Golden Cedar ‘Aurea Nana’ is fairly easy to care for in UK gardens. Plant it in full sun to partial shade for the best colour development. It prefers well-drained soil but is adaptable to various soil types, including slightly alkaline conditions. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry spells. Feed with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring. Pruning is generally not necessary due to its naturally compact form.
