The Douglas Fir Blue Wonder Pseudotsuga menziesii ‘Blue Wonder’ is a beautiful medium-sized conifer that adds wonderful bright blue tones to gardens. This tree has a lovely pyramid shape with striking blue-green foliage that really stands out. The soft, flat needles grow from the branches in a nice open pattern that looks great when light hits them.
This variety grows at a moderate rate, reaching around 2-3 metres tall after 10 years, so it’s more compact than the standard Douglas Fir. The blue colouring is really impressive, particularly when you plant it next to darker green shrubs or use it as a centrepiece in mixed plantings. Developed in the Netherlands back in 1910, this cultivar was selected for its superb blue tones, which many consider among the best you’ll find in blue conifers. It’s perfect for adding year-round structure and winter appeal to gardens, and looks especially good with a touch of frost on it.

‘Blue Wonder’ is fairly easy to grow in British gardens. It needs full sun to develop its best blue colour and prefers moist, slightly acidic soil. Good drainage is important, so add organic matter when planting if your soil is heavy clay. Water regularly in the first few growing seasons until established. After that, it’s quite drought tolerant but benefits from water during very dry spells. No regular pruning is needed – it naturally keeps its nice conical shape. A yearly feed with an ericaceous fertiliser in spring will keep the blue colour bright.
