The Coast Redwood ‘Adpressa’ *Sequoia sempervirens* is a delightful compact version of the towering redwood, featuring distinctive blue-tinged foliage that makes it stand out from typical varieties. This small conifer develops into a tidy, rounded form that suits smaller gardens perfectly. The stubby, thick branches carry lovely blue-green needles that give a soft, pleasant texture.

Developing slowly into a tidy mound, this cultivar usually reaches only 2-3 metres after many years, making it suitable for most gardens. The blue-tinted needles look especially lovely in winter sunshine and provide wonderful contrast alongside other garden plants.

This cultivar brings all the appeal of its towering relative but in a beautifully compact package. It’s excellent for providing year-round structure in borders or as a feature plant in a rockery. The blue tones become more intense in colder months, adding much-needed colour to winter gardens.

Coast Redwood ‘Adpressa’ is relatively easy to care for in gardens. Plant it in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It prefers a sheltered position away from strong winds. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Pruning is generally not necessary due to its naturally compact form, but you can lightly trim in late winter or early spring if needed. Watch out for spider mites in dry conditions. Protect young plants from severe frost in their first few winters. With proper care, your ‘Adpressa’ will thrive and provide year-round interest in your garden.

Left to grow naturally, it develops into a broadly conical, fairly open tree reaching 4 to 6 feet (1.5 – 2m) tall after 10 years. With regular trimming though, ‘Adpressa’ becomes a quite dense, bright white sphere.

Supplied in a 2 litre pot.
