The Giant Redwood Sequoiadendron giganteum is an absolutely stunning tree that will add something special to your garden. While these trees can grow enormous, young plants work well in larger gardens.

These 150-200cm young trees are perfect for planting now, letting you watch them develop into magnificent specimens over time. The Giant Redwood is known for its distinctive thick, spongy bark that becomes a beautiful cinnamon-red colour as it ages. The foliage consists of blue-green, scale-like leaves that create a soft, feathery look. This evergreen maintains its colour throughout the year, giving your garden year-round appeal.

Giant Redwoods are quite tough and handle our weather well. They like full sun but will cope with partial shade, and aren’t particularly fussy about soil as long as drainage is good. These trees need very little maintenance and rarely require pruning. They also resist most pests and diseases, making them a reliable garden choice. Native to California, the Giant Redwood has been cultivated here since the mid-1800s.

Planting one means you’re not simply adding another tree to your space; you’re establishing a living monument that might last centuries. It’s a brilliant way to create something lasting for your local area and give wildlife a home. Though the idea of planting such a potentially huge tree might feel overwhelming, growth is gradual in the first years, so you’ll have ages to appreciate its changing shape.

  2. Oldest Trees: Though not quite as ancient as bristlecone pines, giant sequoias still number among the world’s oldest trees, with some thought to be over 3,000 years old.
  3. Largest Volume: For pure volume, the giant sequoia is unmatched. Its enormous trunk and thick branches create incredible girth and overall size.
  4. Largest Tree by Volume: The “General Sherman” tree in California’s Sequoia National Park claims the title of largest tree by volume, with roughly 52,500 cubic feet (1,487 cubic metres).
  5. Largest Tree by Circumference: The “General Grant” tree in Kings Canyon National Park, California, known as the “Nation’s Christmas Tree”, is the second-largest by volume but has the biggest base circumference at about 107 feet (32.6 metres).
  6. Largest Grove: The Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park holds a major concentration of giant sequoias and stands as one of the most famous and extensive groves of these impressive trees.
