Giant Redwood Sequoiadendron giganteum – These massive evergreen trees can grow beyond 100m in height and live for thousands of years. As an endangered species, planting your own helps protect these magnificent ancient trees. They once grew across Europe and Asia, but now survive only on California’s West coast where wildfires and climate change pose serious threats.

These trees are becoming more common across Britain, found in both private gardens and public spaces. Scotland’s tallest specimen is over 150 years old and stands at more than 55m high. Giant Redwoods regularly appear in Britain’s biggest, tallest, oldest and most impressive tree records.

The Giant Redwood Sequoiadendron giganteum, also called Wellingtonia, has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Fully hardy throughout Britain, tolerating temperatures from -20C to -15C.

Growth starts slowly but picks up pace as the tree matures.

Currently stands 80-100cm tall. Expect around 4m x 0.8m after roughly 10 years.
