The Giant Redwood Sequoiadendron giganteum is an impressive tree that can add something special to your garden. While these trees can grow to enormous sizes, young plants work well in larger gardens.

These 150-200cm young trees are perfect for planting, letting you watch them develop into magnificent specimens over time. The Giant Redwood is known for its thick, soft bark that becomes a lovely cinnamon-red colour as it gets older. The blue-green, scale-like leaves create a soft, feathery look. Being evergreen, it stays attractive throughout the year, giving your garden year-round appeal.

Giant Redwoods are quite tough and handle our weather well. They like full sun but don’t mind a bit of shade, and they’re not picky about soil as long as water drains away properly. These trees need very little looking after and rarely need pruning. They also resist most pests and diseases, making them a reliable garden choice. Coming originally from California, the Giant Redwood has been grown here since the mid-1800s.

Planting one means you’re not just adding a tree – you’re creating something that could last for centuries. It’s a brilliant way to leave your mark on the local area and give wildlife a home. While the thought of planting such a potentially huge tree might worry you, growth stays slow in early years, so you’ll have lots of time to watch it develop.

Giant Sequoia Sequoiadendron giganteum holds several amazing records:

1. Largest Trees: Giant sequoias rank among the biggest living things on Earth, with some reaching incredible heights of over 300 feet (91 metres) or more.
2. Oldest Trees: While not quite as ancient as bristlecone pines, giant sequoias still count among the planet’s oldest trees, with some thought to be over 3,000 years old.
3. Largest Volume: For sheer bulk, the giant sequoia can’t be beaten. Its massive trunk and thick branches create incredible girth and overall size.
4. Largest Tree by Volume: The “General Sherman” tree in California’s Sequoia National Park holds the record as the largest tree by volume, measuring roughly 52,500 cubic feet (1,487 cubic metres).
5. Largest Tree by Circumference: The “General Grant” tree in Kings Canyon National Park, California, known as the “Nation’s Christmas Tree”, ranks as the second-largest by volume but has the biggest base circumference at roughly 107 feet (32.6 metres).
6. Largest Grove: The Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park contains loads of giant sequoias and stands as one of the most famous and extensive groves of these amazing trees.

These records make Sequoiadendron giganteum truly awe-inspiring, drawing nature lovers and conservation work to protect these incredible giants for future generations.
