Eastern Arborvitae *Thuja occidentalis* ‘Sunkist’ is a special form of this popular evergreen, prized for its brilliant colour and neat growth pattern. This slow-growing coniferous shrub develops into a medium-sized, oval form that won’t quickly outgrow its space.
The standout feature of ‘Sunkist’ is its stunning foliage colour. The leaves display bright lemon-yellow to golden-yellow tones that create a cheerful splash of colour in gardens. This vibrant colouring persists all year round, making it a favourite for adding brightness to planting schemes.
‘Sunkist’ grows in a tidy, conical shape and stays fairly compact. Being slow-growing means it’s perfect for smaller spaces where you don’t want something that will get too big too quickly. This makes it versatile for different garden uses – whether as hedging, border planting, or as a standalone feature.
This variety shares the hardy nature of other Eastern Arborvitae types. It copes well with different soil types and is tough enough to handle cold winters, making it reliable for gardens in cooler areas. It’s also quite easy to look after once established.
**Cultural Requirements**
‘Sunkist’ does best in well-drained soil but isn’t too fussy about soil type. Full sun brings out the best golden colour, though it will grow in partial shade too. Once settled in, it handles both dry spells and moderate moisture well, but avoid very wet spots.
**Uses in Landscaping**
The compact size and bright colour make it perfect for:
1. **Specimen Planting:** As a standout feature in smaller gardens or mixed borders.
2. **Foundation Plantings:** Close to buildings or along borders.
3. **Rock Gardens:** Its modest size and bright colour work well here.
4. **Hedges:** Plant several together for a colourful hedge.
**Maintenance**
Very easy to care for. Pruning isn’t essential, but you can trim it occasionally to keep it tidy, particularly if you want a more formal shape.
**Hardiness**
‘Sunkist’ is very tough and handles cold winters down to -20C without problems.
**Potential Issues**
Whilst ‘Sunkist’ is generally robust, it can sometimes get spider mites or leaf blight like other *Thuja* varieties. Keep an eye on it and deal with any problems early.
