The White Cedar has been a staple in British gardens for over 400 years, with the bright ‘Sunkist’ cultivar winning hearts since it arrived in the 1960s.
This lovely conifer adds a splash of golden cheer to any garden with its vibrant yellow foliage that stays bright all year round. While many yellow conifers fade in the summer heat, ‘Sunkist’ keeps its rich colour beautifully, making a bold upright feature wherever you place it.
The delicate, scale-like leaves grow in flat, fan-shaped clusters that stack neatly up the plant. Come winter, the foliage develops lovely orange hints, bringing welcome warmth to the garden during the darker months. The result is bright and cheerful without being over the top.
‘Sunkist’ naturally forms a tidy, narrow column that needs very little pruning to keep its shape. It grows at a steady pace, putting on about 15-20cm each year, so it’s simple to keep at the size you want.
This conifer suits British gardens perfectly. It’s completely hardy, coping well with cold winters and dry summers once it’s settled in. It’s not particular about soil type as long as drainage is decent, and it’s happy in full sun or light shade.
‘Sunkist’ works brilliantly in lots of garden situations. It makes an excellent focal point, fits well into mixed plantings, and creates gorgeous golden hedging. It’s especially useful for adding height without using much width, ideal for compact gardens.
