Eastern Hemlock ‘Fantana’ Tsuga canadensis ‘Fantana’ is a charming dwarf conifer that adds elegance to gardens. This compact evergreen is valued for its delicate, feathery foliage and attractive, rounded growth pattern. The needles display a vibrant, fresh green colour, maintaining a lush look all year round. During spring, lighter-coloured new growth appears, creating an appealing contrast with the older foliage.
‘Fantana’ has a slow growth rate, usually reaching just 1-1.5 metres tall and wide after 10 years, which makes it ideal for smaller gardens or as a standout feature in bigger spaces. Its naturally dome-shaped form needs minimal or no pruning, reducing maintenance work. This variety works brilliantly in rock gardens, mixed planting schemes, or as a compact hedge.
A major advantage of ‘Fantana’ is how well it copes with shade. Though it can handle full sun, it really flourishes in partial shade, making it a great option for those awkward, dimmer areas of your garden. The thick growth pattern gives superb year-round structure and makes an attractive background for flowering specimens.
Eastern Hemlock ‘Fantana’ also supports garden wildlife. Its dense branches provide safe shelter for small birds, helping to make your garden more wildlife-friendly. This hemlock type suits our climate well and copes with our damp winters and the odd summer dry period.
Eastern Hemlock ‘Fantana’ is fairly easy to care for. Plant it in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. While it can tolerate full sun in cooler areas, it prefers partial shade, especially protection from harsh afternoon sun. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant but appreciates consistent moisture. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch away from the trunk. ‘Fantana’ doesn’t require regular pruning, but you can lightly shape it in late winter if needed.
