Cedrus atlantica glauca

£16.95

Cedrus atlantica glauca, commonly known as the Blue Atlas Cedar, is a majestic evergreen that’s native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Known for its impressive height and pyramid-like form, it provides an eye-catching display year-round with its silvery-blue to bluish-green needle-like leaves. The tree’s mature specimens develop broad, barrel-shaped cones, adding to its ornamental value.

This cedar variety thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, and is fairly resistant to harsh weather conditions, making it a robust and low-maintenance choice for landscaping. Its aesthetic appeal and sturdy nature make it a popular selection for parks and large gardens.

The Atlas Cedar Cedrus atlantica is a magnificent evergreen that adds North African mountain character to British gardens. Originally from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria, this conifer stands out with its distinctive blue-green needles and grand stature.

When young, Atlas Cedars grow in a classic pyramid shape, but they develop a more spreading, flat-topped appearance with age. The needles are short and rigid, forming thick clusters that create a dense, full look. The blue-green foliage colour is especially notable, particularly in varieties like the well-known ‘Glauca’.

What makes the Atlas Cedar particularly attractive is its seasonal appeal throughout the year. Beyond its evergreen leaves, the tree develops impressive barrel-shaped cones that grow upright along the branches. These cones need up to two years to fully develop, providing ongoing visual interest.

Atlas Cedars grow slowly but live for many decades, making them a long-term garden investment. They can reach substantial heights over time, becoming a standout feature in spacious gardens. The wide-spreading branches create pleasant dappled shade, ideal for summer relaxation.

These trees offer more than just looks; they’re valuable for local wildlife too. Birds frequently nest in their branches and use them for shelter, whilst the cone seeds feed various animals. The thick foliage works well as a windbreak, making the Atlas Cedar both practical and attractive for garden use.

Atlas Cedars prefer full sun and well-drained soil. They’re tolerant of various soil types but don’t do well in waterlogged conditions. Plant in a sheltered spot to protect from harsh winds, especially when young. Water regularly during the first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, they’re quite drought-tolerant. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches, as these trees naturally maintain their shape. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring if growth seems slow. Be patient, as Atlas Cedars are slow-growing but will reward you with their beauty over many years.
