The Golden Deodar Cedar Cedrus deodara ‘Aurea’ is a tree that really brightens up any garden. This golden form of the Himalayan Cedar adds a brilliant splash of colour to gardens, whatever the weather brings. It’s a medium to large tree, usually reaching 15-20 metres in height when grown, with a wide, pyramid-like form that opens up as it matures.

What makes ‘Aurea’ so special is its amazing foliage colour. The delicate, needle-like leaves start off bright yellow in spring, giving a wonderful golden display. Through summer, this softens to a lovely yellow-green shade, quite different from the blue-green you see on regular Deodar Cedars. This golden colour stays all year round, making ‘Aurea’ a real showstopper in any season.

Just like the normal species, ‘Aurea’ has beautiful, weeping branches. These arch downwards in lovely curves, giving a gentle, flowing outline that looks particularly stunning when lit up by those golden needles. It’s really something special in winter, when the golden leaves seem to catch and hold onto what little sunlight there is.

Come spring, both male and female cones appear, adding extra interest. The male cones shed their pollen, whilst the bigger female cones stand tall on the branches like small golden barrels, taking two years to fully develop.

In gardens, Golden Deodar Cedars make superb feature trees. They’re ideal for bigger gardens or parks where they’ve got room to grow properly. That unique colour makes them brilliant focal points, and they’re great for brightening up shadier spots or creating lovely contrasts with other evergreens.

These aren’t just pretty trees either. They offer important shelter and nesting places for birds, with various wildlife feeding on their seeds. The golden leaves can create a warm, sunny feel even on dull days, really cheering up the whole garden.

Though they grow a bit slower than regular Deodar Cedars, ‘Aurea’ trees live for ages. Given the right conditions, they can thrive for many decades, getting more impressive and full of character as time goes on.

If you want to make a striking colour statement, create some living sculpture, or simply grow one of the world’s most gorgeous conifers, the Golden Deodar Cedar is a fantastic pick. It’s a tree that adds warmth and grandeur to gardens, giving unique beauty and interest throughout the year.

Plant Golden Deodar Cedar in full sun for best colour, in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It needs space to grow, so choose the site carefully. Water regularly when young, but it’s drought-tolerant once established. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Minimal pruning is needed. Protect from strong winds, especially when young. It’s hardy in most UK areas but may need shelter in very cold regions.
