Lawson’s cypress ‘Bleu Nantais’ Chamaecyparis lawsoniana is a beautiful conifer that adds style to gardens.
This variety stands out with its lovely blue-grey leaves that keep their colour all year round, giving gardens interest through every season. ‘Bleu Nantais’ grows in a neat, cone shape and usually gets to 2-3 metres tall after 10 years, which makes it perfect for smaller gardens or as a feature plant in bigger spaces.
The thick, soft foliage forms flat sprays that give the tree a lovely texture that looks great next to other plants. This slow-growing evergreen works well in different soil types and does brilliantly in our climate, giving gardeners an easy-care plant that still looks fantastic. You can use it on its own as a showstopper, in rock gardens, or as part of an evergreen hedge – Lawson’s cypress ‘Bleu Nantais’ brings colour and charm to gardens all year long.
Size
As a dwarf variety, ‘Bleu Nantais’ grows quite slowly and typically reaches around 2-3 metres tall after 10 years when growing in good conditions.
Growth Habit
It grows thick and bushy, which makes it great for adding shape and structure to gardens, particularly in rock gardens, borders, or mixed planting schemes.
Care and Requirements
Like other Chamaecyparis lawsoniana varieties, ‘Bleu Nantais’ prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. It’s important to protect it from harsh winds and excessively wet conditions, as this can damage the plant or lead to fungal issues. Also try to avoid very exposed positions.
Pest and Diseases
While generally robust, it can be susceptible to certain pests and diseases, especially when stressed. It’s essential to watch out for cypress aphids and to monitor for symptoms of diseases like cypress canker.
Soil
Moist but well-drained (will tolerate most soil types)
Pruning
Best pruned in late winter or early spring. First, remove dead/diseased branches. They’re sensitive to heavy pruning and won’t regenerate from old wood so avoid heavy cutting. Maintain natural shape with minimal cuts. Focus on thinning for airflow. Use sharp, sanitised tools to avoid spreading disease.
Hardiness
Fully hardy down to -20C
Ultimate height
0.5–1 metres
Time to ultimate height
20–50 years
