This variety of Lawson Cypress *Chamaecyparis lawsoniana* stands out thanks to its lovely silver-grey foliage, perfect for gardeners wanting to bring lasting colour and interesting texture to their space throughout the year.

‘Chilworth Silver’ has a steady growth habit, usually putting on around 20-30cm each year. It will eventually reach 4-6 metres tall, forming a broad cone or pyramid shape that brings height and structure to the garden. This graceful form works well in medium to large gardens, either as a standout feature or as part of mixed plantings and woodland areas.

The main attraction is definitely the foliage. The small, scale-like leaves show off a gorgeous silver-grey shade that stays consistent all year round. This cool, metallic tone looks brilliant against other garden plants and brings a classy, almost mystical quality to the space. During winter, the foliage picks up subtle blue hints, keeping the garden interesting through the darker months.

‘Chilworth Silver’ is tougher than it looks. It suits our climate well and copes with both full sun and partial shade, though you’ll get the best colour in full sun. It likes well-drained, slightly acidic soil but adapts to different soil conditions. It also handles urban environments reasonably well, making it suitable for all sorts of garden situations.

This conifer is popular with gardeners for its unusual colour and graceful shape. It works brilliantly as a feature plant, where the silver-grey leaves become a real eye-catcher. You could also plant several together to form a gentle, cool backdrop for other plants. It suits both contemporary and traditional garden styles, bringing year-round elegance and class.

Lawson Cypress ‘Chilworth Silver’ is relatively easy to care for, which is good news for UK gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but it’s adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it appreciates consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought. Feed it with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring if desired, but it generally doesn’t require much feeding. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you want to maintain a specific shape or size. If you need to prune, do it in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
